• Respiration use of oxygen to release of carbon dioxide (CO2) and energy. It takes place in the organelle known as the mitochondria. Photosynthesis is the absorption of CO2, light energy and the release of oxygen and energy. It takes place in the chloroplasts of plants, namely the chlorophyll. Light reactions will only take place in the presence of light and ark reactions can be performed in conditions that have no light. The first experiment required a respiration chamber with the use of germinating mung beans. It was set up accordingly, and bromothymol blue to the end of the capillary tube. At every one minute interval, the distance the dye had travelled was recorded. A second respiration chamber was set up to serve as the control. It was set up in an identically to the one before it, except pebbles were used. The respiration tube moved quickly and successively towards the chamber, while the compensation tube had no apparent change. The second experiment was based on respiration. 30 holes were punctured from a green leaf and were placed in a syringe. Fluid was drawn up into the syringe and a vacuum was created. They were then separated into groups of ten, one set being placed in a dark cupboard and the other two being placed in front of a light source. The first trial did not have any discs rise, whilst the second had discs rising successively. The third experiment required eight, clear sample jars. They were labelled and filled with solution containing bromothymol blue. The first two jars were sealed with just the solution, the second pair contained elodea, the third pair contained two snails each and the final pair contained both elodea and two snails. Flora and fauna that were kept in the light respired faster and the fluid turned yellow well before the subjects kept in the dark cupboard.
